Humanity in the Movies?

So recently I’ve gone to see two movies in theaters the Movie 9 and the movie District 9 now I liked both movies overall and I really liked District 9 but I’m not writing today about the movies or even a review of the movies themselves. The part I want to discuss is the human element in both of these movies. Some spoilers below.

In 9 they illustrate how destructive we are by creating a machine that can create war machines, with a scientist using himself to create other creates basically to fight and kill the machine that man created. So the entire world is in shambles without any hope of survival even with the destruction of the machine’s by the so called remaining humanity within the nine. Showing that our lack of concern for others but creating better war machines will somehow be beneficial yet in reality is our let down, oh the quest for power.

In District 9 it’s shot as a documentary style of aliens landing on our planet not by choice, or with any hostility towards us but by more or less an accident. The first thing we do is not help them but quarantine them and put the aliens in sub par living conditions call them prwns (i think that is how it’s spelt) which in the movie is a derogatory term and basically treat them like crap. So the one guy involved with them has an accident is now being turned into a prwn and the rest of the movie is about him doing everything he can in the most selfish of methods that could be chosen at any given point, to get himself fixed. He even teams up with one of the prwns for help who says he can fix him and from that point on that’s all this human cares about getting fixed, screw everything else. In the end he does do one act of good to actually help but everything was for his own selfish gain, without any care for the aliens or anything or anyone else.

I really wonder how accurate these movies are about the human element and how we truly treat each other, or how we would treat another life form if it did come to this planet. It’s almost like Hollywood is saying everyone look in the mirror your destroying everything and your self centric attitudes will only lead to self annihilation. However it does make great block busters and i hope they do a sequel to District 9 when the aliens return to help out their own kind from our hospitality that humanity seems to offer.

Just something to think about and maybe someday the world will realize this and things will turn around.

  1. Mandia says:

It’s a well known fact that throughout history all we do is destroy. Humans (mostly) will stop at nothing to better their OWN situations, and while we create things to ‘help’, we mostly end up hurting. ‘I am Legend’… they create a cure for cancer only to find that it turns everyone into zombies.. ‘I Robot’.. they create robots to help us, and in the end… it’s against us. Look at anything man has created to help, and I think you’ll find that most of them are only helping to contribute in some way to our destruction.

  2. Right I would have to agree with you there, but with I robot, and I am Legend the created things turned bad, where as with these two movies the bad ones are really the humans themselves not just what they created.
