HTC Magic Text Messages in the Wrong Order?

Saturday, September 12th, 2009

I’m blogging this so that hopefully it will help people without them having to look to far for an answer.

Okay so you got the coolest phone on the planet the HTC Magic running the Android system from Rogers Communications but when you text message it’s not in the right order?!?!? It’s showing that any message sent to you is coming from eastern standard time and for you that could be 1 hour off or up to 4 hours off. You can’t find any reason for your HTC’s Magic Thread messaging to be messed up. Now you’ve scoured your phone for some setting that you must have made a mistake on, you have found nothing.

Now you are scouring the web finding forum after forum complaining about this and how evil Rogers is. Calm down you finally hit the right place and no Rogers is not evil they actually have the solution on their website and my wonderful wife found it for me as I was in the same position as you.

What you need to is upgrade your rom on your phone, it was a glitch but a fix has been released so here are the steps to getting your phone issue resolved.

*Warning this is going to remove all your applications from your phone so write them down so you can get them after. It also wipes contacts but if your using google contacts your phone will pick them up again when you connect your account.

  1. go to - https://your.rogers.com/web_auth/downloads.asp?product=Wireless
  2. Select Software from first drop down, select HTC from second Drop down
  3. For your magic first get the HTC Sync 2nd bullet in the list save it to your computer and run it. This is used to connect your phone to your computer. After this is installed and running plug your phone into your computer with the usb cable it came with.
    1. Now on your phone you may get a notification that requires you to HTC sync with your computer, make sure you do that so that your phone and computer start talking.
  4. Next download HTC Magic Software and save it your machine
  5. Run the application you have just downloaded now at this step it takes about 10 min to update and you can’t disconnect your phone or let your computer go to sleep as it can mess up and potentially break your phone, as it will mess up the install ( you’ve been warned )
  6. From here on out follow the prompts and your phone will have it’s rom updated and now your messaging is fixed.
  7. Final Step go get your favorite applications from the Android Market Place and re-customize your phone.

It reads more complicated than what it is but if you have trouble you can always have a CSR from Rogers help you as they were helpful with us looking for and finding the solution. Or leave a comment and I’ll do what I can to help you.

However as a warning anyone leaving a comment saying that their screen is black and they haven’t tried turning it on yet I have a solution immediately – Take the phone and accessories and put them back in the box and return it to your local rogers and tell them this phone is to complicated for you. I’m just joking i’m sure everyone in the world has gotten that email forward about the CSR with the guy and the computer that wasn’t plugged in.

Good luck and keep on enjoying your Android HTC Magic (Google) Phone.

SMC Gateway 8014 WG – Open Nat

Thursday, July 9th, 2009

Here is the overall situation I have two Xbox 360’s one wired one wireless and I need the nat to be open for both so as you saw from my earlier D-link post it didn’t work.

This is the wireless router provided by Rogers SMC Gateway 8014 WG, and with the port forwarding i have been able to get one xbox 360 to open, with the other one’s Nat being moderate. I called rogers tech support who all of sudden were not helpful. This is the first complaint I’ve had about rogers tech support, up until last night they were very helpful but last night started the blame game. Saying if it was the router it would affect my pc which is untrue and just annoyed me.

So there is a couple of things I’m going to try tonight to see if we can get this up and running, but with this router if I forward the exact same ports for both xbox’s one of them won’t be able to connect to live at all. So I will be trying port forwarding for one, and dmz for the other to see if that has any effect. This router does not have UPNP so I can’t try that, but apparently the problem is having to xbox’s behind one connection which you would think with new technology would just work but as evidence has shown hasn’t worked yet.

If I get a working solution I will deffinately post it and link to the article online I found most helpful.

D-Link WBR-1310 – Open Nat?

Wednesday, July 8th, 2009

If you are looking for a router and you play Xbox Live this is the last one you want to choose. By doing a search you will see many people had the same problem as me that the nat is always set to strict or moderate and will kick you off xbox live and mess up games like Halo3.

Now there is lots of things you can try and I went through them all from documents on the web, to xbox live support, to D-link support(the worst support, not helpful at all.. they spent an hour trying to blame my internet service provider, xbox live, and me that i wasn’t doing what they asked.)

Moving on so first I setup all of the port forwarding rules, made no difference,
enable dmz that’s suppose to put my xbox on the outside of the router -no difference,
enabled UpnP no difference,
enabled gaming mode no difference,
final step upgrade the firmware no difference,
and repeat all of the steps 3 more times as they decided I was an idiot and didn’t put the information in right the first time.

I spent 2 hours on the phone with DLink changing settings restarting stuff and they could not make this thing work, and from what i’ve read online anyone else with this router has had the same problem.

So moving forward I will not be purchasing any D-Link Products after this wonderful experience I’ve just gone through, My conclusion is that this product isn’t worth the money, it worked great untill Xbox Live, it’s just an inconsistent product and I think there is better out there. I will be getting Rogers built in router with WiFi today and I have already spoken with their Tech’s and they said it should not be an issue.

So hopefully my problem will be resolved or hopefully at least Rogers will know thier own product enough to fix the problem, i’ll blog on that tomorrow to let you know if it worked.
