Social Networking Your Own Rules
I came into work this morning and found an email that highlighted something that I really never consider to be a problem, however realistically it is a big problem. The email provided contained a link to an article on Twitter awareness
Now for myself I don’t consider it a problem as I don’t really follow the trend topics, but in reality I should note it as other people who may not be as aware might be falling for some of these tricks.
These are some self imposed rules that I have for my social networking for Facebook, Twitter, and Linked In
1. If I don’t know them or the company I don’t follow them whether or not they follow me I don’t play the return the favor game.
When following a company I make sure I go to their main website like empiretheatres.ca to find their true twitter account. This way I know i’m following who it says i’m following.
2. Your not my friend your not getting access to all my information.
Facebook lock it down and don’t just add anyone because they have requested you. People change over the years and if your not really in communication with them or plan on being in regular communication you shouldn’t have them on your list. In reality who you knew in High School isn’t who that person is now so why would you add someone who is a complete stranger?
3. If you get a message or a notification that is coming from a strange source forget about it.
There is nothing on the web that will make you an instant millionaire but there is tons of things that are looking to take from you.
4. If you see people re-tweeting information or posting that there is some virus or something to be concerned about.
Go to official websites and verify that it’s true before reacting as good news and bad news can spread like wild fire and most time without and cited sources. So if your going to pass it along make sure to verify it first.
5. My final rule – if your best friend or someone close to you does something that hurts you, upsets you, or your in an emotional reaction state of mind.
Please stay off facebook and twitter the things you say on there cannot be taken back they cannot be hidden or returned. This isn’t the place to vent that is what a phone call is to a friend/loved one is for. After you are past the point of reaction and are at the stage of consideration then it’s safe to post as you will be thinking with a level head and can comprehend the consequences of the statements you are about to make.
These are my rules and if you think they will work for you apply them, or make your own rules but just be careful as not everyone out there is favor of your best interest.
